Think of the times you have experienced loss—a miscarriage, perhaps, or a failed relationship. Maybe you have been passed over for a promotion that rightfully should have been yours. You try to be brave, to keep a stiff upper lip, and move on. You leave your tears unshed. Then a friend comes to you and expresses her sympathy and gentle understanding, and suddenly your eyes mist over. Reading good writing can be like this. It can connect us to those parts of ourselves which we may have denied or repressed, but which make us human, and allow us to accept ourselves the way we are.
At the same time, we are reminded of the commonality and humility of the human condition: others have traveled the same roads we have.
