"The knowledge that leads to all the ancient wisdom of Thoth is hidden in..." Ahmose whispered, nodding towards the centre of the papyrus as his hands were occupied, "and then there are words I do not understand. They are not of any language I know. But maybe you do understand the language, being a goddess?"
Merit stared at the words, paralysed with shock.
"I see you understand their meaning," Ahmose said nervously. "Do you wish to share what you see? Is it something bad?"
"How old is this scroll?" Merit whispered.
"It must be hundreds of years old. But how old exactly, I cannot say," Ahmose said. "What I do know is that it has been kept with the oldest scrolls of the Temple, and even so this scroll is probably copied from scrolls even older than they are."
Merit read the words again and again, her mind refusing to believe what she read. Ahmose could not have understood the script even if he had asked the help of speakers of every known country around Egypt to help him. The reason was that the words were not in any language anyone knew - yet. A language that was not even born...
