To Merit's surprise she stared at the piece of papyrus for a while, moving her finger along the first vertical lines of the hieroglyphs, then moving to the left to the second line. Her lips were moving silently, searching for the words.
"Can you actually read the hieroglyphs?" Merit asked.
"The what?" Mut-Bity looked up.
Of course, the word hieroglyph did not even exist yet. The Greeks would later name the writing thus, combining two words. Hieros as in sacred, and glyph or gliphe, meaning carving. But the Greeks would not arrive to rule this country for another thousand years.
