“She’s left everything to a pig.”
Cam’s two best friends – Killian Rafael de los Santos O’Connor and Jackson Stone – looked up from the secluded table in their favorite bar on Brickell Avenue.
Killian paused, his drink suspended halfway to his mouth. “What?”
“Who?” Jackson followed up, looking just as confused.
“My latest client.” Since Killian hadn’t made a move to finish his drink, Cam swiped the glass and downed the contents.
Killian actually growled at the theft.
“I need it more than you,” Cam said, welcoming the heat scalding his throat.
“Someone better be dead then,” Killian said. “You don’t touch another man’s drink, amigo. Especially mine.”
“Actually, someone did die, and she might be my ticket to a partnership in the firm.” Cam signaled the waitress to bring another round to replace the one he’d stolen. “If I can survive the case, that is.”
“You’d better rewind and tell us the whole story,” Jackson said.
Cam sat back in the chair, wondering how he’d been roped into something so crazy. “Exactly what I said. My latest client, an heiress of considerable proportions, died and left most of her worldly goods to her pet pig.”
The brows of the other men winged up to their hairlines.
“As in the barnyard animal?” Jackson asked.
“She doesn’t live in a barn,” Cam said. “Matilda is a pampered pet residing in Victoria Armington’s mansion in Palm Cove, Florida.”
“Where’s that?” Killian asked.
Jackson waved a hand. “Forget where…I want to know more about the pig. Was the lady nuts?”
“Let’s go with eccentric. Very eccentric. Maybe even devious.” The waitress arrived with reinforcements and Cam immediately took another gulp. “She’s set up the most elaborate custody battle I’ve ever seen, between the three remaining Armington descendants. All women, by the way. Somehow, all the males have died out.”
“A custody battle?” Killian and Jackson spoke in unison.
“Call it a battle for the throne,” Cam said. “Whoever wins custody of Matilda…”
Now both men nodded. “…Wins control of the money.”
