“Laura Lee! Danny!” Miss Addie called out to the adolescents who were already taking watch of the events taking place via the screen door. They rushed to her side, neither wearing shoes.
“Laura Lee, you help me and Leroy get her up to the room. Danny, you look back there in the back of that trunk…I know Leroy got some type of bag.”
“Yes, Ma’am,” Danny was taking note of the instructions.
“You find one and take this package here down to the lake behind Uncle Fairly’s house.
Don’t stop nowhere, and don’t talk to nobody. Put this package in the ‘trenched side of the lake, and then you come right on back, alright?”
“Yes, Ma’am.”
“Don’t talk to nobody now.”
“Yes, Ma’am. I won’t.”
“And take the back way. It’s the quickest.”
Danny hurried with the black garbage bag under his arm.
“No…no…Yall can’t just do things this way,” Leroy protested.
“Now you listen to me,” Miss Addie said in her matter-of-fact tone. “You ain’t seen none of this that done went on at this house tonight. I don’t create problems, I solve them. You ain’t gonna speak a word of this to nobody—ever---and I got a loaded shot gun I’ll get right now if these words gonna be a problem with you, and we can load you on down to the lake, too. Now Norella gotta get up to this room to get seen about. She got a graduation to attend to.”
