Lead Me, Guide Me by Doris M. Atkers
Lead me, guide me along the way, For if you lead me I cannot stray.
Lord let me walk each day with Thee. Lead me, oh Lord lead me.
Many of the special hymns in my life remind me of my father who served as the pastor of a small church in my hometown of Howell, NJ. Lead Me, Guide Me is an example of one such song. If my memory serves me correctly, this hymn and It Is Well were two of my father’s favorite songs of praise. In addition to reminding me of my father, this hymn also takes me back to a time when I was youngster trying to figure out my place in this world.
At that age, I was relatively new in my relationship with Christ and quite naïve in my understanding of the world. Growing up in a small town, I often wondered how normal my daily routines and activities were. Does everyone my age have a yellow ten-speed bike that they rode to work as a dishwasher at a local restaurant? Did everyone who rode a bike have to partially roll up their left pants leg to keep it from getting stained by the grease on the chain? In addition to those world changing concerns, that was a time when my life was prodded forward by songs like Lead Me, Guide Me.
Sometimes, being a teenager means feeling invincible and thinking you know everything. Hymns like this reminded me that every now and then, I need something beyond my capabilities to move forward. Even though I was one of six siblings, I understood that the best guidance I could receive was from God, for with His wise and time tested counsel, there was no way I could stray.
