I recall the first time I saw Jesus, son of Joseph of Bethlehem. He was in the Temple with a large group of leaders. Jesus was sitting at their feet, soaking in their knowledge. I approached the group to listen to the questions of the young man. The rabbis were answering his questions with more questions, as was the custom when teaching. As I drew near, I realized this young man was answering their questions with even more questions, as if he had studied for several lifetimes. The priests and rabbis were astonished by the boy’s knowledge. I was jealous of his gift.
I remember I once asked Jesus, “How will you recognize our Messiah?”
He answered, “The prophet Habakkuk said, ‘The earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord’s glory, as the waters cover the sea.’” Then he gave me a pleasant smile I never forgot, even to this day. He was a typical boy in many ways, but I will always remember the confidence he carried when he answered that question.
