“For the sinner is condemned to hell!” Pastor Tom’s words echoed through the church as he said again, “The sinner is condemned to hell. Eternal damnation for their sins. By lusting for another man’s wife, they do not know God.”
The pastor’s face reddened with each word. He had a look of fury on him and his finger was out pointing to the sinful congregation before him, condemning all.
He couldn’t condemn Lucy, though, without turning the finger on himself. Pastor Tom Moore was a hypocrite.
Lusting after a woman was only considered wrong if done outside the saloon walls. Everyone in town, at least of the male population, knew this. In the town’s eyes the saloon women were a bad habit, a stress release, just like the beer they drank from the bar that shared the soiled doves home. It was well known most every man in town went in the saloon to drink.
What people weren’t sure about was which men climbed the stairs into the bed of a saloon girl.
