“I had originally arranged for a friend to join us, but he’s been detained at work. We will meet up with him tomorrow if need be.”
I mentally perked up at his words. The “friend” was a close-kept secret amongst case officers heading for eastern Europe with assignments like mine. As long as you hadn’t pissed anyone off, as long as you showed true potential, someone might clue you in. I’d been lucky enough to have three different people pull me aside and tell me to make sure I checked in with this guy before I headed to Bulgaria…if he was in London. Apparently he was still extremely active in the field despite his high position within British Intelligence. God forbid the CIA officially acknowledge that they were briefing their officers with MI6 officers, though…it was pride and bullshit within the agency at its best. Meeting him was strictly unofficial business.
