Every day when the sun was high, big sea turtles would line up near the shore.
“The first one to jump the turtles, run down the beach and climb to the top of the highest boulder is the winner,” said Darren.
“On your mark...get set...GO!” The race was on.
Spencer began to run so fast that his hooves barely touched the sand. He flew past the others.
He was at the boulders in a flash. He scrambled up to the top and twirled around until he felt dizzy.
“I WON!” he yelled loudly as the others stood on the rocks below him.
“Ha! I finally beat you guys,” said Spencer.
As he turned away from his friends his smile turned to stone and he froze.
Spencer’s jaw dropped, and he became silent when he saw the Jolly Roger flying from the top of a ship in the cove.
He knew that was the pirate flag and it was flapping in the breeze right here on the shores of Pigonia.
He heard voices coming from the ship in the distance. He listened carefully:
“If these swine don’t give up peacefully, we’ll take them by force.”
“Pigonia will be ours within the hour – and so will all these tasty pigs.”
Spencer knew that must be the captain of the pirates. He watched as a boat full of pirates was lowered to the water.
What he didn’t know was that four other boatloads of pirates had already reached the shore and were headed for the palace and the village.
“Go find Miss Clarice and then hide in the bushes,” Spencer told his friends.
“I’ve got to tell Admiral Snout that the pirates are here! I’ll be back to get you.”
He took off running.
Young Spencer ran yelling at the top of his lungs into the Admiral’s office.
“Admiral! The pirates are coming! The pirates are coming!” said Spencer breathlessly as he jumped up on the Admiral’s desk.
The Admiral was eating his lunch and watching TV.
He was used to Spencer’s pranks, so he thought it was all a game...until he looked at the little pig’s alarmed face.
“The pirates are in the cove! I heard them say that they are going to take over Pigonia and kidnap all the pigs!”
Admiral Snout could see that this was no game. He had to act fast.
The Admiral called the watchtower guard on his walkie-talkie.
“What’s going on up there? Do you see a ship in the cove?”
“Uh...yes, Sir. It’s flying a...BLACK FLAG! It’s the pirates!”
“Ring the warning bell and call the troops. We have to protect the Duke and Duchess with our lives!” said the Admiral.
“Yes, Sir. It looks like two of them have already gotten over the wall. They’re heading for the palace now.”
Spencer’s eyes grew wide when he heard that the pirates were going toward the palace where his mom and dad were. He was determined to push back the pirates.
“Admiral! You save the palace. I must go back to the lagoon. I left my friends and Miss Clarice there alone!”
Spencer jumped on Zeus and took off to the lagoon. When he arrived, he saw a one-legged pirate who had the scared piglets tied up with a rope.
He leaped off his horse and landed on Peg Leg’s shoulders. He began to slap him on top of his head with his hickory sword like a bongo drum.
“Huh...? What...?” said the stunned pirate dropping the rope holding Spencer’s friends.
“Zeus, go back and get Admiral Snout,” ordered Spencer. “You guys wrap that rope around this stinky pirate so he can’t get away.”
“Why, you rascally little pigs. I’ll git ya for this!” said Peg Leg as he wiggled around helplessly.
“Let’s see you try,” they laughed.
