Before long, the path that Dart traveled turned inward and widened to about six feet. Dart saw a wide bridge ahead and took out the pouch of bubblegum. The bridge hung over a thousand-foot crevice. When Dart stepped on the bridge, four leprechauns appeared, blocking his way. Although they stood only about two feet tall, Dart knew they had magic powers.
“Do you have payment to cross the bridge?” demanded one of the leprechauns.
“I have a bag of bubblegum for Trudy the troll,” Dart answered.
“Trudy doesn’t own the bridge anymore,” declared another leprechaun. “She sold it to us, and we require one gold coin to cross the bridge.”
“All I have is this bag of bubblegum that the wizard gave me for payment across the bridge,” Dart replied. “I’m sorry, sir, but that’s all I can give you.”
“Sir!” shouted the leprechaun. “We’re female leprechauns! My name is Jeanie, and these other three are Vicky, Vera, and Janis.”
When Dart looked closely at them, he did notice that they didn’t have beards. Well, the one who called herself Jeanie had a few chin hairs, but that wouldn’t qualify as a beard.
