The phone rings twice. Then he answers.
"This is Xavier." His voice is smooth, detached. Very work-ish and not at all the friendly, seductive voice that is burned into my memory.
"Um, hi." I murmur stupidly. The way he answered his phone has thrown me off a bit. Quickly I remember my confidence. "Hello, Xavier. This is Lila. Or Birthday Girl, as you seem to like to call me." My voice is sanguine with a touch of flirtatious. Perfect. Exactly what I was going for.
"Lila? Seriously?" Xavier sounds genuinely shocked.
"Why are you so surprised?" I feel as though I have the upper hand, and I’m loving it.
"Um... Well..." He says.
His bumbling makes me brazen. "Are you surprised because I was supposed to tell Gigi whether I chose a or b? And then based on my answer, you would have either called or not called?”
Xavier chuckles lightly in response. “Yes, I suppose so."
His sexy, flirtatious voice is back. And, oh, does it do things to me.
"Well, I suppose I changed the rules and didn't tell you." Now I’m teasing him. I'm surprising even myself with my confident banter. I have never, ever spoken to a guy like this.
"Birthday Girl, you might be more of a rule breaker than I thought." Xavier sounds intrigued.
Oh, believe me, I’m breaking all my own rules by even giving you the time of day.
I backtrack a little, fearful I’ve given Xavier the wrong impression. "Not quite. I like rules. Rules are good."
"How about I create a rule?" Xavier is playful again.
"And what would that rule be?" I’m curious to know. I feel my upper hand slipping away. Dammit.
"My rule is, you have to let me take you somewhere tomorrow."
The words hang between us. There’s really nothing to think about. Of course I will go. But it won't hurt for him to hang on for a few seconds.
