Becky stretched and slowly got to her feet. She’d decided to sleep on the floor near the injured so she wouldn’t have far to go if there was an emergency. She looked around for Sarah.
“She’s over there,” said Catherine, pointing to a location about halfway down the rows of pallets.
Becky looked and nodded. She walked past her patients to find they were all resting. Catherine followed her slowly, carefully watching which ones she lingered over. Catherine had been a nurse before becoming a minister’s wife. She found the training quite useful over the years. It also allowed her to bring in a second income when she and Don started their life together.
Becky, satisfied all was well with her patients, turned towards the cooking fire.
“You’re really very good,” said Becky finding some hot water and tea.
“Pardon me?” asked the older woman.
“I mean as a nurse; you’re exceptionally good. You keep your cool and keep the patients relaxed. It’s a privilege to work with you.”
Catherine blushed. “It’s been so long; I’m just doing the basics. There’ve been so many changes over the years I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to cut it as a nurse in today’s world.”
Becky leaned over hugging the woman. “Nonsense, where we are today, requires someone who’s good at the basics. All the fancy equipment and procedures mean nothing in a situation like this. Just keep on doing what you’re doing, and we’ll get through this.”
