Once Arsinoë snuck into Cleopatra’s bedroom and tore the
head off of her Isis doll, boasting about it all about the court the next
day. When Roxane heard, she praised the child, saying, "It is my hope,
dear one, that you will prove a plague to that brat as you grow!"
Cleopatra in turn retreated into herself, blossoming into a
precocious if somewhat bookish princess in spite of, or, as Isis
predicted, because of Roxane, while Roxane, who could neither read
nor write, spent her time bathing, primping, and flirting shamelessly
with the men of the court.
