Giving up her search, she went downstairs to the kitchen and found the cats. They were eyeing her from beneath the table. They stretched their necks forward, sniffed their food bowl, then turned their copper eyes back to her and began yowling.
"All right," she said. She found a can of cat food in the cabinet and punctured the lid with a can opener. The smell of Kitty Cuisine mixed with the odor of vomit still clinging in the air. Her stomach churned. She dropped the tin lid in the trash and approached the cats' bowl.
Cinder and Charming drew away from her and arched their backs.
"Nice kitty," she said, not believing her words. The cats had never liked her. She dumped the food into their bowl and retreated to the sink.
They stretched out, sniffing cautiously, crept forward, sniffed again, then turned their coppery eyes on her as though they suspected some trick.
Even if they weren't hiding their dislike, they weren't in their usual attack stance. "Let's have a truce, okay," she said, feeling foolish for talking to them. "I'll feed you, and you won't claw me to pieces. That's fair, isn't it?"
They gave her a final inscrutable look before hunkering down by the bowl and eating.
When Iris had taken them in, Crystal had been amused at her naming them Cinder and Charming, never having noticed any romantic inclinations in her sister before. Now that she knew Iris read romances, the naming made more sense.
