ARE YOU READY?
When people ask me what kind of education they need to get into game development. My answer is usually, “How much do you already know about it?” This chapter provides some simple exercises to help determine how much you already know, and the areas you might need to focus on before pursuing a career in games.
YOUR ASSESSMENT
Aspiring game developers come from a wide variety of backgrounds. It can be hard to know if you have skills that might apply. The following is one of those cool, points-based tests to figure out where you fall on the “Readiness Index.” Your score will give you some insight into how well you’ll be able to handle the tasks of the job, and help identify your strengths as well as areas where you could grow. Answer each of the questions on the following page and assign points based on the following scale:
• 0 points I don’t know anything about it
• 1 point I’ve had a little experience with it
• 2 points I usually get the results I want
• 3 points I help other people with that
• 4 points I’m a pro
Hardy Says: If you feel like you fall somewhere in between two categories, I recommend being safe and picking the lower score.
