First, the boring bit: codes are systems of using letters, words or symbols instead of ordinary words to store information or send messages. They’re normally used to keep information secret.
OK – that’s the boring bit! Experts will tell you that ciphers are also a form of secret communication, working in a slightly different way from codes.
Well, let’s not bother about that - let’s get straight to it!
The Timetrippers has lots of secrets lurking within and under its words.
You can work out whether they’re codes, ciphers or just pretty good fun to dig for.
Let’s start with names – many of the characters in the book seem to have pretty wacky ones. Why? Ah-ha! That’s a secret ------ but have a think about this one:
Graham “Pele” Esson.
Why is the Elfsite Reach football coach called that?
Well – rearrange all the letters of his name and you’ll find out why!
Got it yet? Yes? Well done - he is, isn’t he?
Need a clue? One of the two words his rearranged name forms is “manager”!
Got it now? Brilliant!
Not got it yet? --- Phone a friend.
OK, that’s a starter, so how about our friendly jeweller, Fred Wingsole. Think about it----- what does the rearranged name say about him?
Nifty, eh?
So when you come across some of the names, have a think for a mo – and places too -------.
How about Dan’s address for starters -----?
Right, on we move from names.
Dan and Sara have seven time trips spread through 70 chapters. Significant? Well of course it is! Seven’s the magical number, isn’t’ it?
How many voyages did Sinbad make? How many Deadly Sins (and Contrary Virtues) are there? How many Ancient Wonders of the World were there? How many Roman Gods – and hence how many days in a week? How many Brides for how many Brothers? How many dwarfs did Snow White team up with?
And back to travel – how many continents are there? How many seas did the pirates sail?
OK, OK, enough already!
Now let’s move this thought on a bit.
How many colours in a rainbow? – yes, I know, but bear with me – what are the colours?
Now think about the rug in the cellar – hhmmm! Why’s that then?
How about the number of energy centres in the body? Yes, there are 7 and they’re called chakras.
Now why would I mention them? --- Well, that’s a secret, but the clue is that each energy centre has a colour associated with it.
Now, moving swiftly on, you’ll remember that Dan sees The Timetrippers book in a lovely shop in North Berwick, and there’s a comment about a secret code
Well, the comment’s true, there is a secret code hidden in the book, and once you’ve worked it out, it leads you to another one, which itself will make you do something!!!
And that’s all for now, about secrets and codes!
