Carnal Moon
While tempted to order something alcoholic, her mother wouldn’t appreciate it. Instead, Gwen opted for iced tea, and Vivian ordered water with a slice of lemon, as usual.
“So you haven’t found a man yet.” Vivian didn’t glance up from the menu she pretended to study. “And now you’re alone like a spinster.”
Gwen kept the menu on the table so Mom wouldn’t see it trembling in her fingers. “Actually, I went on a date last night.” She shouldn’t be doing this. It was too soon. “We’re going out again tonight.”
Vivian’s eyes narrowed as if gauging the truthfulness of Gwen’s words. “Who is he? What does he do?”
“His name is Nick, and he’s a professional photographer.” Gwen didn’t add he specialized with women in bondage. Although the look on her mother’s face would be funny.
“A photographer?” Vivian frowned, setting the menu on the table. “So that means he doesn’t have a steady paycheck.”
“Actually, Nick does quite well for himself.” Why was everything about money? If Mom knew he was a vampire, she’d wonder how much gold he had stashed away over the centuries.
“And what are his plans when he’s not in demand? People lose interest. Can he afford to take care of you?”
“I pay my own bills.” Where was that tea to give her hands something to do? “I have a business that I make a living from, remember?”
“Oh please, you live in an old house with other people,” Vivian rebuked. “You need a place of your own. How will a photographer buy you one?”
“I love my apartment,” Gwen protested. “And Nick’s bank account isn’t an issue for me.”
