Sara stopped smiling, turning her gaze away from Jacob before she spoke. “I, uh… I wanted to say that I’m sorry about Alex.”
Jacob’s eyes widened, fear stabbing at his heart. “Y-you don’t mean he—”
“No, no!” Sara cut him off quickly, shaking her hands in front of her in a ‘calm down’ gesture. “He’s alive!” At least, the last time I checked in on him he was, she thought. “He’s in the ICU right now—wait, where are you going?” Jacob spun on his heel, heading back into the hospital. “Jacob, wait!” She shifted the car’s gears into park as fast as she could, and got out of the car, rushing over to grab Jacob’s arm. “Hold on, please!”
Jacob yanked his arm out of her grasp, turning halfway to face her. “What is it? What?! My best friend is in there, and he needs me a hell of a lot more than you do right now. Don’t you have some guy to go seduce somewhere, or something?” Sara flinched, staring down at the sidewalk quietly. Jacob’s steely gaze softened, his shoulders relaxed. “Sorry…”
“No, it’s fine. I deserved that.” Sara shrugged slightly, the keys jingling in her hand. “After all, I have a reputation at Indigo City U. I would be surprised if you didn’t know about it.” He chuckled nervously, stepping away from the automatic doors that sat open, letting the cold air from the winter afternoon into the building.
