Chris dumped the carry bag on a well-scrubbed wooden table that stood in the centre of the large, normally-airy kitchen. With all the windows closed, the room smelt of the disinfectant that had been used to clean it.
Minette snorted and trotted across the tiled floor into the hallway that led to the living room.Taya grinned. ‘Min doesn’t like the smell of clean,’ she said. ‘She prefers the totally stinky smells of garbage bags or anything mouldy and disgusting.’
‘It’s certainly pine-fresh in here, although the cleaner missed a spot,’ Chris said, indicating the print of a shoe on the tiles near the door. ‘What’s that though?’ He sniffed several times. ‘Is it candle wax? Can you smell it?’
Taya sniffed too. ‘Could be, but I don’t see any candles.’ She took a cookie from the carry bag and munched it thoughtfully. ‘Where shall we start looking?’
