“Some are born with Fyire Blue in their blood,” answered the old woman.
I lay in bed in the cool morning air, listening to Mom clang around in the kitchen and waiting for the clock to strike an hour she wouldn’t find odd for me to get out of bed. Only minutes before she’d woken up, I had eased open the screen door and tiptoed across the family room, up the stairs and into my bedroom. I rubbed my tattoo and stared at it, unable to fall asleep even though I was completely exhausted from being up half the night. Finally I reached over and poked Maldova.
“I am sleeping peacefully. I am taking up no more than a wee spot on the bed. Do not accuse me of being a bully in the rack, as that would better describe someone such as yourself.”
“I was not accusing you of anything, even though you deserve it!” I said, eying up the tiny corner of the bed I was left with and Maldova sprawled over the rest of it. “I was just wondering…”
Maldova’s dragon eyebrows lifted in impatient expectation. Her eyes twinkled violet.
“I was wondering what will change now that I have this Sight.”
Maldova paused, as if considering. “The Ddyaedel have been around all along, you just could not see us. Now you’ll be able to keep an eye on everyone. Maybe it is better this way.
