CARRYING THE TORCH
Later that summer, Sumner Davenport, the property supervisor from Donald Sterling’s Beverly Hills office who had visited my mom at the Ardmore Apartments and had been fired the previous year per court documents, sued Sterling for sexual harassment for what she cited was “unwanted and offensive physical conduct.” In her case, Davenport maintained that she had been fired because of her refusal to comply with his racially motivated behavior of discrimination against tenants, his illegal eviction processes, and of course, his offensive and unwanted sexual conduct toward her.
She would lose her lawsuit during a jury trial two years later.
For now, it was time I figured out what I was going to do with my life, so I started focusing on the HR field and recruiting talent for companies. I also went back to school and obtained a degree and multiple certifications in Business.
In the midst of this, one of the attorneys on the case called and asked if I would be willing to continue the fight on my mother’s behalf.
The truth was, my life was way too full to take on a court case, but I knew mom would want me to carry the torch forward. Therefore, I agreed… and boy did I get in deep!
There were constant meetings with both the Housing Rights Center attorneys and Sterling’s attorneys. Those from the latter camp asked me so many questions I would leave the meetings feeling as if I had been the one committing some sort of crime.
But, I continued anyway, realizing that this is exactly what mom had been going through.
I couldn’t quit. No… I wouldn’t quit!
