They almost made it. Zigzagging across the field, Linsora caught the tip of her boot on a stray stone. She pitched forward, reaching out to Permac as she toppled and bringing him down into a flowerbed with her. She caught sight of a small cadre of Yorel’s guards rushing up on them. Game over, she thought, but it’s only a loss, not a backgammon. Not even a gammon. And I didn’t even double the bet. She wrapped her arms around Permac and started to laugh. The guards stopped several feet from them. Linsora wondered what they must think finding two unruly fugitives convulsively laughing instead of cringing in fear or guilt. She didn’t care. Let them wonder. If they think Khizarans are impulsive and dangerous with a twinge of insanity thrown in, so much the better. Let them continue to be afraid of us.
