Pulling open the door, she greeted him with a smile first then a kiss. With a smile she stepped back, letting her eyes float to his blue button-down shirt with just the cuffs folded back and showing off his strong hands and forearms. His jeans fit in all the right places, showing off his assets to a tee.
“Well, well, well,” he said, shaking his head as he checked her out.
She could feel the heat rising to her cheeks, and held up her hand. “Stop. You’re going to make me blush. Besides, I was just going to compliment you.”
“Too late for that. Your cheeks are red like tomatoes on a vine.”
She batted her lashes. “Like tomatoes on a vine, huh? That’s a new one.” She reached for her purse and sweater that hung over the chair. “I’m ready to see the rodeo,” she chimed.
He motioned her to go first and then they headed out.
The excitement at the rodeo was super intense. Crowds of people filled the stands in anticipation of a great show.
“So, you say you’ve never been to a rodeo before?” He knitted his brows as he tried to make sense of this.
She didn’t want to admit it, but it was the truth. “I know it seems weird, but I just don’t—”
He cut her short. “Get out much.” He leaned into her shoulder and then dropped a kiss right on top of it.
She lifted her shoulders and sighed.
“Well, that’s all gonna change now that you’re with me. We’re gonna do and see everything we can because we only have this one life here on earth, ya know?”
“I agree. I want to. It’s just that I’m so awkward when I get around a large crowd, unless it’s children.”
“I know this is probably not the place to talk about it, but do you know why you have some of these feelings? Have you ever talked to a professional about them?”
She shook her head adamantly. “No, never. I have to be careful because there’s a stigma attached to seeking professional help. I don’t want to lose my job.”
“That’s crazy! Well, maybe I can help you.”
“You’d do that for me?” She blinked back a tear that tried to make an appearance.
“I told you, Lucy, you’re very important to me. If I can help in any way, I will. As a fireman, we are told all the time that if we need to talk to a professional, we can. I think if you want to see one here, I can arrange it. Denver would never have to know.”
Lucy didn’t take her eyes off the arena for the entire rodeo. The rush she felt from all the excitement made her feel like a kid who had eaten an entire bag of candy. When Sam asked her what her favorite event was she couldn’t decide.
“I enjoyed the skill the bronc riders had. They had to stay on there for eight seconds and they couldn’t touch the horse with their free hand. That takes a lot of practice.”
“Yep, and when they fall, it hurts.” He chuckled.
“I also enjoyed the timed events. But are you sure the calves and goats don’t get hurt at all?” She lowered her head and peered at him above her sunglasses.
He laughed. “I promise. No animals were hurt in the making of this rodeo.”
