She grabbed the music box from her dresser and hurled it at the mirror. The glass shattered into hundreds of jagged pieces. She stared at her broken image. That was all she had left.
“Sam?” Jeff called. “Are you all right?”
Samantha froze. When had he come home? Did he know about the photo shoot? Did he know the truth?
“Sam, I heard something smash and…” Jeff stopped in the doorway. “What happened?”
Samantha didn’t look at him. The room spun slowly.
Jeff stepped closer. “I got a call from the studio awhile ago. Are you okay?”
Samantha shivered, her teeth chattering together. She choked out the words, “I’m sorry.”
Jeff took Samantha’s hand and led her away from the glass. “Tell me what happened.”
“I can’t.”
“Sure you can. Whatever it is can’t be that bad.”
Samantha huddled on the bed, hugging her knees. Jeff deserved to know the truth. What she was doing to him wasn’t fair. But how could she tell the man she loved, the only person in the world she’d ever allowed close, that her whole life was a lie?
