Grace had a cat named PeeKnuckle. The girls loved
PeeKnuckle.
They found her abandoned and talked Mr. Simmons into
letting Grace keep her. Mr. Simmons named her PeeKnuckle. The girls
thought the name was funny, but they liked it. Mr. Simmons said he had
a client named PeeKnuckle he had seen that morning. Unfortunately, the
cat got hit by a car. The girls decided they wanted to bury PeeKnuckle at
Hope’s house. They figured Hope’s dad wouldn’t care, and that’s where
the three of them hung out together. The girls were going to meet after
school and bury her together and then have a little ceremony. Hope ended
up having to stay after school to make up a test. Grace’s brother needed the
car, so she couldn’t come over until later. The night before, Grace put the
cat in her trunk and drove her over when she found out her brother needed
the car. She left her in the box in the backyard by the grill.
When Mary got to Hope’s, she saw her uncle Cliff was home. She
figured she would bury the cat, then they could have the ceremony later.
Mary went in the garage and got a shovel to dig a hole. She noticed the
shovel looked like it was used recently and there were muddy boots by
the garage door. She went in the backyard. She noticed what looked like
fresh dirt in the far corner of the yard. She decided to bury PeeKnuckle
in the side of the yard by the fence. She struck the shovel in the ground
a few times to dig up dirt. She had dug down a few feet when the shovel
hit something. Mary figured it was a rock. She tried to get under it and
pry it out of the way. When she got under it, the dirt fell into a hole that
was in the ground. She could see hair, long hair. She knel
t to see what it
was. What she saw horrified her.
