As I entered the room I had a clear shot of the bathroom. There, on the floor by the tub, the room boy was filling the in-room thermos with water from the tub tap. Surely that wasn’t the thermos marked in bold letters: “This water has been boiled. DO NOT DRINK FROM THE TAP!”
The room boy got up quickly and tried to explain that I had not seen what I just saw. Oh, shit, I wonder how long he has been putting tap water in the thermos instead of going downstairs and getting boiled water from the kitchen.
My stomach did a little flip-flop. I wondered how long I would have before I would have an explosion of gastroenteritis! I had taken to heart the admonishments of my fellow epidemiologists and had made a conscious effort to drink more water since I was in Calcutta and had access to clean water.
