Autumn carries more gold in its hand than all the other seasons. ~Jim Bishop, 1907-1987, American journalist
Fit For Fall—Fit For Life
This season brings a noticeable change in climate, energy and diet, making it an important time to focus on your health. Historically, Fall/Autumn is a time of gathering, preparation and rest, but today’s modern, highly pressurized lifestyle can create a busyness that frequently weakens your health.
The ancient Ayurvedic system of wellness embraces all aspects of your daily living, especially how the natural elements affect your health and well-being. This healing practice observes how your internal environment mirrors the external environment. For example, in the Fall/Autumn, when the air becomes dry, causing the leaves to dry and fall from their trees, you may notice that your skin feels drier and perhaps more itchy than in the Summer season. You may also experience cold hands or feet as the colder external temperatures linger in Fall/Autumn.
To help maintain balance in your body’s internal rhythms through the hectic holidays and climate changes of Fall/Autumn and Winter, you may benefit from an internal cleanse early in the season. A Fall/Autumn cleanse will prepare your body for the warmer, heartier, heavier protein and fatty foods of Winter. To make this an easier process for you, I suggest you follow the simple steps I mentioned for the Spring cleanses (Chapter 9). Select fruits and vegetables from Fall/Autumn’s harvest for a nutrient-rich cleanse of juices and purees. Most fruits and vegetables in this season are high in antioxidant and phytochemical plant-based nutrients that strengthen and support your immune system. This is the season to bring order back into your schedule, your plans and your health.
