A simple understanding of each season’s personality helps us savor its gifts and disciplines. One benefit of living wholly in each season is that you may begin your wellness garden whenever you choose. There is no right or wrong time or age to begin cultivating improved health and vitality. Nature has blessed animals in their natural surroundings with an innate wisdom. Their instinct tells them what to eat, when to gather for winter, where to find shelter and when to hibernate. Humans also possess an inner wisdom; we just forget (or neglect) to use it. The more we rely on external conveniences and comforts the less aware we may become of our internal rhythms.
I encourage you to resist how and what the written calendar (and media and marketing experts) urges you to do at specific seasons. For example, we seem to be told when we should make resolutions, lose pounds, take off inches or fight a cold or flu attack. Instead, I suggest you resolve to intentionally and consistently cultivate a wellness lifestyle that honors your body’s and Nature’s rhythms all year round. Consider the months on the calendar as more than a collection of days. Greet the seasons as different and exciting ways of living! Remember, wellness remains a process, so let’s learn as we go and grow—gaining courage, confidence and wisdom along the way—in every personal season.
