A few minutes later, we were lying in bed under the covers together in the dark. Everything was peaceful and still as her head lay on my chest. I slowly ran my fingers through her soft hair. I felt her breath tickling the hairs of my chest every time she exhaled. It was rhythmic and relaxing and soon we were asleep.

“No! Wait! No! No!” I screamed, breaking the dead silence of the night. “Wait!”
The light came on and my eyes flew open.
Angie was yelling. “Todd! What’s wrong? You’re scaring me!”
I looked at her, standing at the end of the bed with her arms folded and trembling. I was confused and sweat ran down my face as I tried to control my breathing.
“I had a bad dream. Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”
My chest was tight, as if some invisible person was squeezing the shit out of me. I felt ashamed for letting this happen in front of Angie. I jumped out of bed and went into the bathroom. I heard her footsteps behind me, so I closed the door behind me and locked it. A few seconds later, I heard Angie trying to turn the knob.
