hird period was just about to start. Mrs. Oxford organized her lesson plans at the front of the room. Alex was back at his invisible desk, the one that was conveniently behind Henry.
As Kaylee entered the room, she walked quietly toward Alex and stood beside him. He wanted to ignore her. He was still trying to understand what Henry was saying to him. It didn’t make any sense. Henry was the one who was acting strange, not Alex.
“Alex,” she whispered, looking carefully around the room. “Is it true?”
Despite the promise to himself that he would ignore her, it was very apparent something was wrong. Maybe she was angry at him for ignoring her earlier that morning. Maybe she was still mad about Alex’s ghost question. Maybe she had come to say goodbye. Maybe she had found someone else to follow around. Whatever the reason was, it seemed apparent right away that she wasn’t stopping by to pester him. There was definitely something else on her mind.
“What do you want?” Alex clenched his jaw.
“I heard you’re going to visit that house,” Kaylee whispered. “Is that true?”
Alex wasn’t surprised Kaylee had found out already. She seemed to have the ability to get her nose into other people’s business quite easily.
“Yeah, it’s true. Now, get out of here. Go play with Amber or something.” Alex smiled to himself. He was starting to sound like an older brother.
“I’m not going anywhere until you promise me that you will not go to that house,” Kaylee demanded. “It’s not a nice place to visit.”
Alex laughed and shook his head. He was not interested in having a conversation about the house, especially considering Henry had just made the same request. Alex was his own person and did not need people to tell him what to do―that was his parents’ job. Somehow, he felt the more people pushed him in one direction, the more he wanted to go the other.
“Why doesn’t anyone want me to go to this house? What’s the big deal?” asked Alex, with the full intention of Henry being able to hear him as well. “So what if it’s haunted? What can a ghost do to me? Say ‘boo’ too many times? Float around and wave its see-through arms in the air? I think you don’t want me to go because you’re worried that I will prove everyone wrong. Ghosts do exist. Maddy is right, I just know it.”
Kaylee looked confused. “What are you talking about? I believe in ghosts, you know that. Have you forgotten already? You’re going to be friends with one, ‘member?”
Kaylee was right. She had said that.
“Then why don’t you want me to go to the house on Screaming Ridge Road? What’s the big deal?”
Kaylee glanced quickly around the room, making sure no one was listening. She leaned in toward Alex. “Just swear you will not go to that house.”
“Fine, I swear, now get out of here before you get in trouble.”
“Cross your heart?”
“Go.”
Kaylee nodded and slipped out of the room.
Alex rubbed his forehead and leaned toward Henry. “I’m still going to the house; I don’t care what she says.”
“Whatever.”
