Rosemaria was at her desk and Waite and Osborne were seated in chairs in her cubicle, intent on studying their laptop screens they’d set down on Coleman’s desk. She had gotten home a few hours before dawn after dropping off Josh at 3:00 a.m. She couldn’t get to sleep until 4:00, had to get up at 7:00 to be at this meeting, and now she was so tired she was breathing from memory. They were waiting for Coleman, who had been trying to track down Jennie Seger. Her eyes started to close, and her head was beginning to fall when a quiet voice woke her up. “Baker?” Oh, God, the Lieutenant. Her head snapped up. “Yes, sir.”
“Report to me after you interview Mrs. Levy. Is she here yet?”
“No, sir, she should be here shortly.”
He nodded briskly and walked back to his office, passing Coleman on the way, who stepped aside with a smile and let his boss pass.
Rosemaria looked at him through bleary eyes. “Any luck?”
“She’s not at home and Ken says she hasn’t been in the office since the shooting. He’s worried about her.”
“Well, we know she visited Josh in the hospital, so she’s probably okay.”
“According to Ken, she and Stan had something going, maybe platonic, maybe something else. Whatever it was, they kept it under wraps.”
“Undoubtedly to avoid Lila’s wrath.” Rosemaria had a hard time keeping the sneer out of her voice.
“So, she’s drowning her sorrows somewhere,” Coleman offered.
Rosemaria looked over at Waite, still focused on his laptop. “Waite, you’re good at finding people who don’t want to be found.”
“I’m on it.”
