The Heart of it All
Authentic writing—writing out on a limb—takes faith. It takes faith in ourselves, faith in those who write with us, and faith enough to allow a higher power to work through us. Faith is the commitment to the unimagined, and it requires opening ourselves to risk. Many of us remember a childhood filled with daredevil stunts: shinnying up trees, sliding down hills on a paper sack, swinging from a rope in the hayloft. Every day was a day to live fully, embracing each new experience for the excitement of it all, confident that the world was wonderful and good and there for us to enjoy. Surely we would come to no harm. Then we grew up, and the fearlessness we knew as children turned to caution.
