Jon certainly seemed happy to be back. He headed straight for the riverbank and the shady tree under which he had first fallen asleep yesterday—it was still rather warm, even for a summer evening—and sprawled out on the grass. Becca watched him for a bit, worrying a little about his sunburn, and then headed for the car, where she searched in the boot for her emergency kit. She rejoined him a moment later, sunscreen in one hand and their empty beer bottles in the other. Wading out into the river, she filled the bottles quickly from the middle of the stream and hurried back to sit by Jon's side.
"Here—drink this and I'll get you some more. You need lots of water. I—I'm sorry I kept you out in the sun so long." She ducked her head. "I really did think it was a good idea, honest—"
"It's okay, Rebecca. Like I said, six of one, half dozen of another. We had no way of knowing, and no one showed up here, either, remember? Our note was exactly where we left it." Jon nudged her gently with his bottle, and she gasped at the cold wetness against her skin. He grinned. "Stop worrying so much. You just have to resign yourself to the fact that you're stuck here with me for a while longer."
Becca smiled ruefully, but rolled her eyes. "Yeah, I guess I can still manage."
Jon made as if to swat her, but she evaded him and picked up the tube of sunscreen. "Never mind that—we've got to get some of this on you. It's also good for after-sun, lots of soothing stuff in it. Your face definitely needs it. What about the back of your neck?"
He accepted some of the creamy lotion and applied it to his cheeks and forehead carefully. Becca was sure he was saying it for her benefit, but he insisted that his face felt much better immediately. Then he reached back and rubbed his neck gingerly. "Mmm . . . it's a bit sore, yeah. Could you do the honours?" He pulled his T-shirt over his head, threw it aside, and turned over to lie on his stomach. He breathed out a deep, satisfied sigh. "It's silly, I suppose, but I feel perfectly content right now."
