‘Gary, it’s been a tough day. I was just having a moment of introspection.’ Hattie wearily turned on her side, opened her eyes and looked at the man she’d married. The one she thought she’d grow old and wrinkly with. As it was, Hattie was convinced new lines were appearing on a weekly basis. The news about Rachel wasn’t going to help matters.
‘A moment of what? Ain’t that a medical thing, like when they look up your bum?’ Gary winked to show he was kidding. Hattie sighed, snuggled up closer and told him all about her mum, and what lay ahead.
‘Oh, Hats. That’s total crap. Sorry about my stupid joke, don’t know when to keep my trap shut.’ Gary smudged away a few stray tears leaking from Hattie’s eyes. His touch was still fragile, like brushing against invisible cobwebs. Nevertheless, it comforted her, taking away some of the pain she felt inside.
