Laura stiffened as she thought about Bradford. Fortunately she hadn’t seen him since they’d left the plantation. Jenny had been there quite often to ride Scamp, but Laura had stayed near the cottage. It seemed Saundra had been seeing plenty of him, though, she thought dryly. But then she thought, Why do I care?
“You don’t look happy about the ball, Sissy,” Jenny noticed, looking puzzled.
“Oh, yes, I am. Since the war there haven’t been many balls. I miss the pretty dresses and the gaiety. When I wasn’t much bigger than you are now, I watched the grand balls my parents hosted in the ballroom. I was always too young to go to the parties, but Mother would let me stay up late and watch from the landing above the staircase. I always dreamed of getting to go and dance, but then the war came and the balls ended. Would you like to help me get ready before I go?”
