His thoughts were abruptly interrupted when he heard a shrill, “Bradford!” from behind. Turning, he grabbed the soft, wiggly girl and tossed her high in the air. Laughter filled his ears as Jenny wrapped her dimpled hands around his neck so he couldn’t throw her again. Hanging on to him with all her might, Jenny said, “I have real grandparents just like my friends!”
He pried the tight little hands from his neck and looked into the shining eyes that were sparkling like the summer sun shimmering on a mountain lake. Relief flooded through him as he realized she was safe and happy. Swinging her around to his back, he galloped back into the house with her kicking his sides as she cried, “Giddyup, horse.”
