There, inside the light, was the symbol she’d seen on her mother’s arm.
“How?” Ember whispered, reaching out to touch it. She was completely mesmerized by the emblem. She reached closer. The symbol grew brighter, and when she pulled her hand away, it seemed to dim again.
A scream drew her attention back toward the door, and Ember scurried further under the table, trying to keep out of sight in case they crashed through.
The glow from behind her shone even brighter as she backed up closer to it. Ember’s eyes widened; something was happening. She felt movement again, the one she’d felt earlier, like the ship beneath her swayed.
The door to the inventory room burst open, and Ember yelped. She expected to see one of the men standing there, but, instead, it was Dr. Miles. She looked at him in awe, noticing that the inside of his left forearm was glowing.
She narrowed her eyes as he looked at her. “Do you trust me?”
“No,” Ember said, backing away closer toward her own glowing mark.
“Ember, I won’t hurt you.”
“Says the stranger who keeps showing up at pretty convenient times,” Ember barked back.
Dr. Miles went to reach for Ember’s hand, like he was trying hard not to startle her. “I swear I would never hurt you.” Dr. Miles gave her a smile, but he seemed to be a bit nervous by the glowing on his arm and in the room.
Ember looked closer at the mark inside his forearm. The glowing shape embedded on his arm was the same as the symbol on the ship. The same as her mother’s tattoo.
Before she knew what she was doing, Ember swayed away from him, needing to collect her thoughts. But as she did, she leaned right up against the symbol on the ship, and a blinding, bright light encompassed them both.
