Lupe retrieved the letter admitting her to the week-long summer sports camp from a cluttered shelf in her room at home. She already knew it was to take place at the local university and that it included free tuition, room, board, and some complimentary sports equipment. When she’d first received the invitation months ago, she’d been thrilled. The softball recruiter told Lupe that she would be selected by a top school and awarded a full scholarship to begin her college career.
Now that hope had vanished. Her friendship with Penny, her teammate and catcher, was over, too. Their season had ended badly. Even though the recruiter went on to court more successful players, she assured Lupe that she would still be welcomed at the summer camp. So Lupe packed a bag. It was a brown grocery bag. Beyond her backpack, she didn’t have a suitcase or even a duffel bag.
