“I want your help. He’s sleeping off the party.” Alicia announced her agenda. “We need a new dock sign. We are now official!”
“I can make a sign. What do you mean, official?” Roberto walked around the property to find scraps of wood for a new sign.
“Was this your Tío Salvador’s doing?” Manuel caught up with Alicia. He looked as if he had something more important to say to her, but instead he busied himself watching Roberto rummaging for wood. “An influential man, your Tío.”
“Find a place for this sign.” Alicia wanted to tell Manuel about her plan to write to Tío Salvador and visit Monterey, but something held her back. He was not really a member of the family. He was just a soldier, someone who helped Maria and her family because of his Presidio job.
Roberto collected wood scraps, a pole, and some charcoal for a sign for the dock. They rigged a placard together. “Puerto Oficial” it read. They put the Mexican flag above it and stood back to inspect their work.
“What is this?” Papa approached. “And who are you two young men?” Alicia’s back stiffened when she heard his voice. Roberto and Manuel stopped their work and turned to face Papa.
