1. Share links to useful or interesting content. This does not mean just posting lots of links to your own website. By sharing resources with your followers, you’re demonstrating a willingness to help, and that will increase the likelihood of others following you.
2. Post frequently. It’s up to you how often you post messages on Twitter. But as with the offline world, if people don’t see you, many will forget you. Tweeting at least once or twice a day is a recommended minimum, and 5-10 times is better. Of course, if you get into a conversation, you could tweet much more than that in a short space of time, which isn’t a problem.
3. Be open and real. In the same way that most of us rarely warm to a corporation, so Twitter users are not likely to find a bland and seemingly faceless tweeting style attractive. If you’re not sure how much of the ‘real you’ to share, watch what other tweeters do and you should soon find a level of openness that you’re comfortable with.
4. Follow others. Don’t be afraid to follow anyone you think might be interesting. All Twitter users like to get more followers. Some of those you follow are likely to follow you back. Remember, if having followed someone for a short while you change your mind about them, hitting the Unfollow button is really easy.
5. Share tips. Don’t be afraid to let others benefit from your knowledge and insights. Again, being generous with what you share should make you more attractive to others.
6. Answer questions. In the early days of your Twitter use, you could search out questions which you can then answer, as this will increase your visibility and credibility. As you become more established, you may have questions directed at you specifically.
