Zane continues to have increasingly disturbing dreams in the black marble room. He always wakes up exhausted, sometimes with some new marks on his body, but he doesn’t seem to mind it anymore.
One morning, just after Olivia has left, Zane goes to his studio with a mug of coffee. He sits down in front of a blank canvas; afterwards he turns and looks out the window. Despite the beautiful view, he recalls the glass walls of the old house and the stunning view of the beautiful garden designed by him.
He drinks a few sips of coffee and, without turning, moves his hand to place the mug on a small table beside the easel. At that moment, Zane hears a faint whisper behind him and drops the mug on the floor. It breaks into several pieces, spilling coffee on the floor. He stands up quickly and turns around realizing the room is completely empty.
Zane thinks it was his imagination, then he bends down to pick the pieces and stares astonished at the image made by the coffee. It is as if he were looking at the female figure of one of the three panels by Hans Memling’s Triptych of Earthly Vanity and Divine Salvation.
He stands up to look better and again hears the whisper behind him. Zane turns quickly, but this time he sees a person wearing a blood-red cloak. The garb has a hood with crystal beads in the same color that goes down to the floor like the figures of the lobby’s Hold Tight sculpture.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” says a female voice that sounds familiar.
“Yes,” Zane says, nodding in agreement, but puzzled by the image on the floor and the mysterious figure in front of him.
She takes off the cloak dropping it to the floor and Zane can see it is
