Even in the shadowy darkness of the stairwell, Miri’s eyes shone brightly. I allowed myself to get lost in them a moment until Miri sighed and whispered my name. I leaned my forehead against hers and breathed with her until all my emotions rushed up and out, and then I took Miri’s mouth in my own.
My hands rose to her cheeks where I cupped them, tilting her head upward and deepening my kiss. God, I loved her. I told her a thousand times through my mind, my body, my lips.

I
love
you.
A cold breeze washed over my face so I slowly pulled back, letting the words drift over my lips one more time. “Come back, bright eyes.”
I heard Dancer move onto the bottom step, felt something like impatience and eagerness. “We’re coming, geez.”
But when I turned, it wasn’t Dancer at all, but Marcus.
“What are you doing here, man?” I turned so my body mostly blocked Miri from the kid’s view. Whatever felt off about the guy earlier today seemed to have grown a thousandfold. He leaned against the wall, shadows deepening around him like living things. He didn’t say anything.
Miri pushed past me and shrugged out of my grasp when I tried to hold her back.
“Do you need something, Marcus? We’re about to go to the airport—we could drop you off at the church, if you want.”
The next moments were a blur—I’m not sure if Marcus pulled Miri to him and flew away, if he fell into the floor, or if they both blew away in a million pieces of shadow. All I know is, one second Miri was there, so close to me I could feel the heat of her skin, and the next she was gone and all that was left behind was shadow.
