Little Ainavel heard many frightening stories about the Sea of Darkness.
Seafarers, who ventured too far north and by some miracle escaped from the encounter with a mysterious darkness, returned to the ports of Urianel infected with a strange disease. Delirious in fever, they drifted their blind eyes around as if afraid that all of the sudden a wild creature will emerge from the dark shadows. Some of them fell into a deep sleep and died after a few hours. Others, however, woke up and told stories so odd and incomprehensible, that nobody wanted to believe them.
When Ainavel tried to ask his father if he had ever seen the Sea of Darkness, he met with a strange resistance on his part and when he insisted – with a sudden outburst of rage. It was as if the old seafarer was afraid to reveal a scary secret. The boy felt deeply offended when he realized that his closest friend, who initiated him into the intricacies of the seafaring trade, had a secret he didn’t want to reveal. Ainavel assumed that old captain Lanrad avoided all expeditions to the north.
