Moonlight reflected on the shiny brass of her doorknob. She could actually see it being turned with a careful ease so as not to make a sound. The door slowly and silently swung back, and Laura faintly saw the glimmering blade of a knife tightly clutched by a wicked-looking man dressed in dark clothing. Fear gripped Laura. She tried to scream, but nothing came out as tightness immobilized her body. Finally her loud scream pierced the air, and she jumped up, before quickly rolling under the bed. The assailant frantically searched for her among the covers. She felt her heart pounding as she gasped for air, hoping the man would leave before finding her under the bed. Praying to God to save her, she saw the intruder crouch on his hands and knees before looking under the bed. She edged away from the intruder as far as her trembling arms and legs would allow, as his hands groped under the bed searching for her. Soon she felt his cold fingers grip her leg. As he tried to pull her out from under the bed, she fought with all her strength, kicking at his hands with her free leg. This only intensified the man’s anger, as his icy fingers dug deeper into her tender flesh.
Laura made another desperate attempt to scream. As her dry lips parted, her piercing scream ruptured the still night air. The assailant uttered an ugly word and jerked her leg again. She hung on to the bed frame with all her might. Splinters from the roughly hewn bed dug into her fingers, but she knew she was clinging on for her life.
Bradford called, “Laura!” as he dashed into the room. Her assailant quickly released his grip and ran out the door, rudely pushing Bradford aside.
Half asleep, Bradford rushed forward, continuing to call out her name.
“I’m under the bed,” Laura cried softly.
Since she was still in shock, Bradford carefully took her hands from the bed rail. He slid her out from under the bed and pressed her shaking body against his. His long fingers stroked the tear-wet hair that fell over her trembling frame.
“It’s all right now. He’s gone and can’t hurt you,” Bradford soothingly whispered as he gently rocked her back and forth in his arms.
“He was going to kill me,” Laura muttered. “He was going to stab me with that knife.”
