As Kyle stared at the strips of light on the grass that were able to penetrate the wall of shrubs, he could taste the salty, coppery taste in his mouth as his lips continued to bleed. Several spots in both his upper and lower lips were bleeding, making his whole mouth look bloody. He was very cold, especially on his back and stomach, which were exposed to the elements. Kyle guessed the temperature had dropped to around fifty degrees and was even cooler in the grass.
Kyle’s phone rang again. He assumed it was his wife, Sarah, calling this time because he never came home this late after a game. He was hoping Matt or Caleb had called his house looking for him because he knew his wife well—she would worry and act quickly to get the campus police involved.
The ringing stopped, and Kyle felt a sense of hopelessness. If he could just get to his phone, he could get some help. Kyle was getting really scared and desperate, so he was able to muster a louder moan when the next group of people strolled by. He caught the attention of some State University students who were walking back to their apartment after celebrating at the campus bars.
Kyle couldn’t tell exactly how many there were, but he guessed there would be about four or five of them. He tried to yell for help, but due to the pain in his ribs, it barely came out as an incoherent moan. They heard it. Surely, they would come over and see that I need help, Kyle thought.
