I feel someone gently shaking me awake. “Lucia, uh, I think that we’re here. Wherever that is.” Nesus is still beside me in the back of the black truck. My shoulder is throbbing as if it has its own heartbeat and I feel the sharp intake of my own breath. It hurts. James is carefully navigating the truck down the ramp. The massive garage door opens and we slide slowly into the compound. “What is this place?” Nesus asks me.
“A safe place, “I smile. “Come on. Let’s see if Mother and Father are awake.”
