Bradford sank back down into the chair by her, nodding in assent. Then she began, “Gerald and I were young, and so very much in love, but his father objected to the marriage. He wanted his son to marry someone with wealth and power in order to rebuild what they’d lost in the war. Gerald insisted, however, that we marry, regardless of his father’s wishes, and I agreed.”
