Without a sound, she stole across the living room and approached the front door. She paused to absorb all the strangeness of structure, design, and texture around her, embedding the feel of it all in her memory. She cherished the couple’s refreshing kindness a moment longer. She glowed with eternal gratitude and then straightened with intense resolve. It was a confidence she hadn’t felt once in all these lonely days past.
A part of her longed to stay with Don and Christy. It would be no great effort to embrace a new life here with them. The thought of existing completely cut off from the Allowance-Level System boggled her mind. But Janice worried for her mother’s safety every day that passed. She solemnly aimed to find this Ellis Roberts, or at least a successor of hers in Oleta, if her legacy had passed on to another. If the favor she found in this home was any sign of that rumored in all Pertinaysha, then Janice knew she would find others who could help her.
So she smiled one last time at the sunny living room before slipping out the front door. She made all haste across the open field of wild grasses and disappeared behind the surrounding line of trees. Her heart skipped with joy as she ran.
