The sun felt hot on her bare legs. Her neck was damp under her long thick hair. Her mind loosened in the heat. The human psyche is like the ocean or the sky, she thought. As deep and invisible as the depths of the ocean and as vast inside of us as the starry heavens are outside. She squinted her eyes open and looked up at the sky, then closed them again and continued her reverie. Not a single star is visible when the sun is out, but they’re there all the same, shining down on us. Our unconscious is like the stars in the daytime. You can’t see it, but you know it’s there, exerting influence, shaping your choices. She tried to remember: How had her confrontation with her unconscious begun? When had the terror taken hold of her? When had she started to feel that something was after her? When did she first wonder if maybe the something that wanted to kill her was something inside herself?
